Flu Shots During the Pandemic? Yes, Please

Flu season is just around the corner and flu vaccine rates are predicted to escalate this season so don’t delay in getting yours. The good news is that the same precautions for COVID-19 may be effective in preventing the flu, so we are getting an added layer of protection at the start. #MaskUp

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), routine vaccination prevents illnesses that lead to unnecessary medical visits, hospitalizations and further strain the healthcare system. For the upcoming influenza season, influenza vaccination will be paramount to reduce the impact of respiratory illnesses in the population and resulting burdens on the healthcare system during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are two ways, as an employer, you can lead the way for your employees in preventing unnecessary illness:

1. Take Advantage of Flu Clinics

If you have employees back to work and on-site, you may benefit from an organized flu clinic at your place of business. If you are fully insured and can partner with a local health system or pharmacy that will run your immunization through claims, then you are providing a service at no additional cost to your budget. Check that the provider is in-network for your insurance plan.

Here are a few of the benefits of providing flu shots at work:

  • Reduced barriers and improved access to get a shot

  • Increased number of employees vaccinated

  • Protection of employee health

  • Potentially reduced sick leave

2. Build Awareness for Remote Employees

If your workforce has transitioned to a remote workforce, you can still share information and recommendations on getting a flu shot and where to go. You can find free materials to assist with communication available for download here.

Flu and other vaccines are required to be covered by your health insurance without charging a co-payment or coinsurance. Check your insurance plan to find out if you must go to a specific facility to receive the vaccine. Some insurance plans only cover vaccines given by your doctor or at a limited set of locations.

Many locations will start offering flu shots early September with flu season typically hitting in the Fall. Keep in mind it takes about two weeks for the shot to take full effect so if you are exposed shortly before or during that time frame you can still catch the flu.
